Poglej Church Cave

Poglej Church is actually a rock shelter with a small cavern that was hollowed out by the retreating Bohinj glacier. People first came to the cave when the ice disappeared at the end of the last ice age, more than 10,000 years ago.

Prehistoric man in the Triglav mountains

The great discovery of the remains of stone tools in the cave is proof of the existence of prehistoric inhabitants of the Triglav mountains in the time before agricultural cultures developed. The discovery of fragments of tools and the remains of Alpine marmots, which were a source of food and clothing, tell us that people most probably visited the cave during their hunting expeditions.

A bronze coin and a ring

A further discovery in the cave from a later period consists of a bronze coin and a bronze ring dating from the latter part of the period of Slav settlement. All the items found in the cave can be viewed in the provincial museum at Bled Castle. The view from Poglej Church is excellent and it also makes a good starting point for various hiking and cycling trails.
