An enterprising local man who dreamed of creating a retreat for people suffering from physical and emotional exhaustion (what today we would call burnout) at the top of a hill above Vintgar Gorge. In the centre of unspoilt nature, where time passes more slowly, surrounded by clean waters and clean air, they would be able to gather new strength to help them face the stresses of urban living.
A healer from Podhom
Mindfulness, digital detox and escape to nature are all concepts that are growing in relevance and popularity. Forest walks and deep breaths of pure mountain air have a beneficial effect on one’s sense of well-being and their effects are almost instantaneous. This did not escape the notice of Ivan Jan, a resident of Podhom, who in 1900 came up with the revolutionary idea of creating a retreat for people suffering from physical and emotional exhaustion on the summit of Hom.
Healing in the tranquillity of unspoilt nature
Jan wanted to include the whole of the local community in his project for treating people suffering from exhaustion above Vintgar Gorge. His plan was to offer his customers the chance to switch off and heal through peace, clean water and air, country walks and outdoor work, while members of the local community would supply them with food, clothing and tools. He anticipated the ideas of regenerative tourism – a form of tourism that has positive effects on both visitors and the local community – by as much as 120 years.
From artisans and farmers to the local tailor
Ivan Jan’s plans contained detailed explanations of when and how local people would be able to sell their produce and wares. From fresh fruit and fruit drinks to local cheeses and bread and clothes made from the wool of Bergamasca sheep. Everything rigorously local and of high quality. Even today, when you walk to St Catherine’s and on across the full pastures, you can understand where Ivan Jan got his inspiration for healing through the peace of nature.
