What you can see at this point

Listen to the river. That is the emerald Radovna. It flows like an arrow through Vintgar Gorge, leading you toward beautiful views of the Julian Alps and the Karavanke.

Continue walking in the direction of the river’s flow. Today it will be your loudest companion.

If the mountain waters and forests below Triglav were to hold a celebration, they would meet right here, in one of the most beautiful gorges in the world. When we enter Vintgar, we enter another world, with a simultaneous view of the sky above and a glimpse into the underworld below. Look up and then down again. Repeat. It’s quite special, isn’t it?

For more than 10,000 years, Vintgar Gorge was a mysterious riddle for the people who lived here, and who could hear the roaring of waters between tall cliffs but could not see it. It was not until 130 years ago that two local men walked the full length of the gorge for the first time. Ever since then, Vintgar has been enjoyed by explorers and visitors.

Ahead are your first 2,000 steps of vintgaring, walking above the fast-flowing water of Vintgar Gorge, all the way to Šum Fall. After the refreshing shower of its energy, you will return to the starting point via one of two scenic routes.

The river Radovna will be your rhythm and your music. It almost never warms up on its journey and remains at a constant 13 degrees. The river’s flow averages 25 cubic metres per second, roughly the size of a medium-sized lorry. Those of us who live in the area of Vintgar Gorge like to say that we live with the Radovna. Literally, since it flows from our taps at home and into our glasses. Take a sip of water. Is it from our drinking fountain? How does it taste? Cheers, and onwards!
